Purpose

The University of Maryland, Baltimore received a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust through the Urban Trees program to plant 65 new trees on campus to increase the urban tree canopy in Downtown Baltimore.

Through our landscaping contractor, Lorenz Inc., campus partners including the Office of Sustainability, Design and Construction, Operations and Maintenance, and Environmental Services have identified the best locations to plant the 65 trees awarded through the grant. 

Progress:

As of May 3, 2023:

• On Thursday, November 10, a tree planting event was held for the trees planted behind the Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL) with student and staff volunteers from across the university

• All 65 trees have been planted throughout UMB's campus

• Lesson plan created for the UMB Police Athletic/Activities League (PAL) on the benefits of trees for April 24 and April 26 PAL sessions

• Trees planted behind HSHSL will be decorated from ornaments created from PAL sessions on May 8
