Leading Your Student Organizations at UMB

Students have an opportunity to create a robust community through leading a student organization at UMB. Part of the responsibility of leading a student organization includes ensuring recognition and registration on an annual basis. 

Here are some resources to help you lead and manage your student organization. 

All recognized student organizations at the University of Maryland, Baltimore have a responsibility to know, understand and adhere to UMB policies, procedures, and guidance as well as local, state, and federal laws. Here are some important policies and guidance to keep in mind:

All-Comers Guidance

All student organizations must allow any student to participate, which includes becoming a member, regardless of their protected status or beliefs. All students should be allowed to become an officer regardless of their protected status.   

Student organizations are permitted to hold meetings and events that are only open to members, officers, and/or executive boards that are intended for members only.  

To be a recognized or registered student organization, the organization’s constitution, bylaws, and activities should be in compliance with this all-comers guidance. All student organizations that receive University funding or utilize University resources for events must comply with the all-comers guidance.

Health Education & Clinical Care Guidance  

Student organizations are not permitted to engage in health education or direct clinical care without faculty approval and supervision, where appropriate. Consult with your Student Affairs Deans Office and/or UMB Student Affairs to learn additional information about expectations or if you have questions.

Student Organization Recognition Defined

Student organization recognition means that a student organization's materials has been reviewed by UMB through a school or UMB Division of Student Affairs official providing approval for the prospective student organization to be established. Once recognized, new student organizations can then have access: 

  • Being registered in UMBengaged 
  • Accessing University resources (e.g., request a room reservation)
  • Applying for funding where applicable 
  • Training through SSLE and/or schools
  • Planning events on campus

 

Student organizations can be recognized as a School/Program specific OR a university wide student organization. Please contact the following to request additional information:   

 

 

Registration and Re-Registration Defined

All student organizations are registered on UMBengaged after being recognized. Registration on UMBengaged means that a student organization has been recognized and now wants to be on the official university listing of student organizations at UMB.  

Benefits of being registered Include: 
  • Eligible to apply for affiliated status with USGA
  • Access to digital display, flyer, and poster templates 
  • Submit room reservation requests for locations on campus  
  • Manage your organization digitally on UMBengaged including:   
    • Manage Elections 
    • Access to a website 
    • Event marketing 
    • Forms Management 
    • Community building 
    • Engagement tracking 
    • Manage student membership and recruitment 
  • Transition planning 
  • Succession planning 
  • And more... 

To maintain access to the benefits listed above, student organizations are required to update their organization information annually in UMBengaged through a process called Re-Registration. 

 

 

Registration Process for New Student Organizations

Once your student organization is recognized, it can be registered in the student engagement platform, UMBengaged. Registration happens when you submit your recognition application on UMBengaged. Additional information can be found online at Starting A New Student Organization.

Re-Registration Process (current student organizations)

Students have an opportunity to create community in your School/Program and/or across the University through leading a student organization at UMB. Part of the responsibility of leading a student organization includes ensuring that your group is registered on an annual basis.  

The annual UMB student organization registration process is mandatory for all student organizations in UMBengaged. Registering your existing student organization is simple, and includes the following:  

  1. Student organization name  
  2. Updated Constitution (Sample Constitution), if applicable   

a. Please note, there are some changes in the sample constitutions you are welcome to review and make to make in your student organizational constitution. 

  1. Updated student organization officers: 

a. President (UMB student) 

b. Vice-President (UMB student) 

c. Other officers (UMB student) 

d. Advisor (UMB staff/faculty) 

  1. Confirm your recognition contact?
  2. Confirm your understanding of the UMB All-Comers Guidance (see policies and procedures above).
