Announcing New Chief Philanthropy Officer and Vice President

    Dear UMB Community:

It is my pleasure to share good news with you. On Dec. 4, Greg Bowden will join the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) as our new chief philanthropy officer and vice president. Greg comes to UMB from the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Carey Business School, where he serves as associate dean for development and alumni relations.

A native of the Baltimore area, Greg has more than 25 years of experience in development and philanthropy. In his role at the JHU Carey Business School, he led the strategy and vision for all development and alumni relations activities, securing more than $10 million in philanthropic support each year. Before that, he was senior director for development at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, where he managed fundraising efforts and served as part of the management team for the Johns Hopkins: Rising to the Challenge Campaign. In six years, Greg helped to raise almost $30 million, highlighted by a $4.5 million gift to endow the directorship of the Berman Institute.

Prior to joining JHU, he served as director of development for the Greenwood (S.C.) Genetic Center and executive director of the South Carolina Birth Defects Foundation, which provided diagnostic services, clinical care, research, and graduate education around genetic disorders. Greg also has held fundraising leadership positions with Corporate DevelopMint, Custom Development Solutions, and the Catholic Diocese of Charleston, S.C.

Greg graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership. He also has a graduate certificate in nonprofit management from JHU. Greg lives in Baltimore with his wife Kristen and son Daniel, and they have two grown daughters living outside Baltimore.

I am grateful to those who participated in our search, especially the search committee chaired by Renée McDonald Hutchins, JD, dean of the Francis King Carey School of Law.

I know that you will join me in welcoming Greg to UMB.

    Sincerely,

    Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS

    President
