Racist Graffiti

May 11, 2021

Dear UMB Community,

This morning I learned that a racist message was written on a sign at the School of Dentistry. I am deeply troubled by the disturbing act of hate and want to be very clear that the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) will not tolerate hate and discrimination.

I am dismayed that members of the UMB community and our neighbors may have seen the abhorrent message. I am thankful that it was reported as soon as it was discovered. UMB Police are conducting an investigation to find the party responsible.

UMB seeks to be a place where all feel safe and welcomed. Our core values guide us, and we are enriched by diversity and inclusion, in the broadest sense. I ask that we each look out for one another. If you see or hear anything that is concerning, or if you have any information about this act of hate, please contact UMB Police at 410-706-6882. You may also report to the UMB Hotline (reports can be anonymous) at 866-594-5220 or online at UMB's EthicsPoint Hotline.

I take this act very seriously. We must stand together in condemning acts of racism and hate or any form of discrimination. Thank you to all who continue to work to make UMB a welcoming place for everyone.

Sincerely,

Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS
President
