Campus Security Collaboration

Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) leadership team, we are pleased to announce a new collaboration that will improve our security environment outside our buildings for patients, visitors, students, faculty, and staff. In the next few months, 30 additional security officers will be recruited and trained to patrol our shared campus on foot. This represents a significant increase in security staff.

These new officers will be hired by UMB with participation by UMMC security. They will be deployed under a jointly developed plan, providing a greater presence out on the streets and in the areas of greatest need, especially during peak times of shift change. The new security officers will be very visible to our University community. The costs for these additional security officers will be shared by both institutions, and our goal is to complete the hiring process by June 1 of this year.

The safety of our workforce, our patients and visitors, and our community is a top priority for both of our institutions. The UMB Police Department and UMMC Security Office work very closely together to ensure your safety, and the UMB Alerts and Safe Walk/Safe Ride resources serve our combined community. Working collaboratively in this effort brings us another step forward to enhancing the safety of our teams, our patients, and our visitors.

Sincerely,

Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS
