The Mechanical Trades team within Operations & Maintenance brings together our Plumbing and HVAC shops to ensure safe, reliable, and comfortable conditions across campus. Working closely with the Building Automation Systems team and Building Systems Chiefs, we maintain 24/7 coverage to keep essential utilities and building environments operating smoothly. By caring for the systems that deliver water, gas, heating, cooling, and ventilation, we provide the critical foundation that enables UMB’s teaching, research, and patient care.
Our Responsibilities Include:

Plumbing Systems – Maintaining pumps, piping, and fixtures for domestic hot and cold water, stormwater, sanitary systems, and DI water.

Gas & Vacuum Systems – Maintaining campus and building-level natural gas, storm and waste pumps, drinking fountains, and vacuum pump systems.

HVAC & Climate Control – Servicing ducts, stand-alone chillers, boilers, and refrigerant A/C systems and performing preventive maintenance to keep building environments safe, reliable, and comfortable.

Exhaust & Ventilation – Maintaining exhaust systems, including laboratory fume hoods and specialized ventilation systems.

Controls & Automation – Repairing and modifying HVAC and plumbing controls to optimize performance and efficiency.

Emergency & Preventive Maintenance – Responding to urgent issues and performing routine servicing to reduce downtime and extend system life.

Vendor Oversight & Contract Management – Coordinating and overseeing external contractors for specialized mechanical and plumbing services to ensure quality, compliance, and timely project completion.
