The Electrical Trades team combines four specialized shops - Electric, Electronics, Elevator, and Systems Reliability (High Voltage), under one umbrella within Operations & Maintenance to keep the main campus and all UMB-operated, affiliated, and partner properties powered, safe, and accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our skilled professionals maintain and improve the university’s electrical systems, so every UMB space operates safely, efficiently, and reliably for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Our Responsibilities Include:

Power & Distribution – Testing, repairing, and maintaining campus-wide electrical distribution systems, backup generators, and motor controls, as well as planning and performing scheduled outages to support projects, upgrades, or preventative maintenance.

Lighting & Small Electrical Projects – Responding to “lights out” calls, maintaining indoor/outdoor lighting, exit and emergency fixtures, and installing receptacles or lighting for small renovations.

Vertical Transportation – Maintaining and repairing elevators, ADA lifts, dock lifts, and other conveyance equipment

Life-Safety & Security Systems – Testing, repairing, and maintaining fire alarms, card access, panic alarms, and small uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems.

Preventive Maintenance, Compliance & Vendor Oversight – Performing routine inspections, keeping detailed service records, ensuring adherence to state and federal safety standards, and managing external service providers to ensure quality and timely delivery.

Emergency Response & 24/7 Coverage – Providing rapid response to power outages, elevator malfunctions or entrapments, and urgent life-safety issues at any hour.
