Federal Requests and Communications for Research Awards
Dear UMB Research Community,
The Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) continues to be made aware of requests and communications from grant/contract sponsors being directed to a variety of UMB employees, including principal investigators (PI) and research administrators. These communications cover a wide range of critical topics, such as renegotiation of award terms, termination of an award, requests for additional information, updated processes regarding proposed publications, completion of surveys, and more.
To minimize risks to your research programs and those of your colleagues, do not respond to any sponsor requests independently. Additionally, do not assume that SPA has also received the communication.
Please forward any communication or request from a federal agency to Jill Frankenfield (SPA) and Laura Scarantino (Sponsored Projects Accounting and Compliance), copying your department chair and dean. UMB’s Office of Research and Development and the Office of University Counsel are collaborating closely to respond to all federal requests.
Please visit the research section of UMB’s Navigating Federal Orders and Guidance webpage for updates on federal developments and to access an archive of UMB guidance, FAQs, and links to resources.
Finally, we also are working with our colleagues at the University of Maryland, College Park, and the state of Maryland as appropriate.
Sincerely,
Patrick O’Shea, PhD, MS
Vice President for Research
