At UMB, we are committed to providing our educators, students, and staff with cutting-edge technology that is secure, private, and designed for responsible AI use. While the full Microsoft Copilot license is not presently available to everyone at UMB, Microsoft Copilot Chat is now available to our entire community, offering a powerful AI assistant that stands apart from other large language models (LLMs) for its enterprise-grade security and privacy.

Microsoft Copilot Chat

Microsoft Copilot Chat is now available to all University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) employees and students. Access it through any web browser, and when you sign in with your UMB credentials, you are working in a protected environment designed to keep your information secure.

  • Search for Information: Ask any question—Copilot will search a variety of sources, analyze them, and provide a thorough response.
  • Generate Text: Give Copilot a prompt, and it will analyze and generate text to meet your needs.
  • Generate Images: Describe what you need, and Copilot will create a set of images based on your description.
  • On a Smartphone: Use the Copilot Smartphone App for convenient, on-the-go access. Refer to the Copilot Smartphone App PDF for details.

To access Microsoft Copilot Chat, all users are required to sign in using their UMB credentials. This authentication process is essential to ensure that your conversations and data remain secure within the university’s protected digital environment, fully leveraging UMB’s rigorous privacy and compliance standards. By signing in with your UMB account, you actively contribute to safeguarding both personal and institutional information, while also enabling seamless access to all integrated university tools and features.

After signing in, users can easily verify their authenticated status by looking for the green shield icon with a check mark displayed in the Copilot Chat interface. This visual indicator confirms that you are securely signed in with your UMB credentials and that your session is protected within the university’s secure environment. If you do not see the green shield and check mark, please ensure you have signed in with your UMB account, or contact university IT support for assistance.

M365 Copilot (Full License)

M365 Copilot (formerly Copilot for Microsoft 365) is being evaluated at UMB and is currently available only to individuals granted a license for evaluation purposes. This advanced AI assistant is fully integrated with Microsoft 365 applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.

  • Integrated with Microsoft Applications: Access Copilot directly from the toolbar in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Work Efficiently: Organize and run meetings with ease; Copilot can provide summaries and action items for participants.
  • Get Summaries: Quickly catch up with summaries of emails, Teams conversations, and meeting transcripts.
  • Get a Head Start on Documents: Use Copilot to draft documents in Word, PowerPoint, and other M365 tools for a productive start.
  • Manage Your Inbox: Simplify your email management—Copilot can summarize long email chains and assist in composing responses.
