What is an appointment like? 

Online Appointment

You virtually meet with a consultant using video/audio and discuss your paper together. You must be present for a conversation.

eTutoring Appointment

You submit your paper before the appointment, and will not talk with the consultant in real time. You receive comments from consultant by the end of the appointment block.

In-person Appointment

You meet with consultant for a conversation in the physical Writing Center space, located in the SMC Campus Center, Rm 307, 621 W Lombard Street Baltimore, MD 21201.

What do I need before the appointment? 

Online 

Laptop with video and/or audio functioning, or phone. Google doc of paper and any assignment description or rubric.

eTutoring

Word document of paper and any assignment description or rubric, uploaded to WC Online.

In-Person

Mask, Google doc of paper, and any assignment description or rubric. Bring your laptop or use one of ours.

How do I start the appointment? 

Online

Log into WCOnline a few minutes before your appointment starts. Open your scheduled appointment and click "START OR JOIN ONLINE CONSULTATION."

eTutoring

Upload your Word document and assignment description at the time the appointment is scheduled, at the latest. Feel free to attach your draft earlier.

In-Person

Walk into the Center a few minutes before your scheduled appointment and check in.

What should I expect during the appointment? 

Online

Discuss your writing with the consultant, focusing on, for example: rhetorical and linguistic choices, audience expectations, and strategies for responding to and/or pushing back against those expectations, as well as strategies for using and critiquing manuals of style and other writing resources. See our mission statement for more information. Appointments last 45 minutes.

eTutoring

The consultant will independently make in-text comments and provide summary feedback. Please be advised that consultants WILL NOT change any of your paper. Rather, they will respond as one reader, asking questions to prompt further reflection and revision. See our mission statement for more information.

In-Person
