Community Composting Dropoff

Through a USDA grant with Baltimore City's Department of Public Works, UMB started a community composting dropoff pilot in September 2023. Total Weight of Compost Collected as of April 2024: 4,245 lbs.

When and Where to Drop Off

Starting in January 2024, we are moving to an asynchronous drop-off model. Drop off your food scraps at any time at:

  • the SMC Campus Center (621 W. Lombard St); bin is located in the courtyard between the Campus Center and School of Nursing
  • the Community Engagement Center (16 S. Poppleton St); bin is located along Booth Street

Each time you come to drop off material, take the survey/quiz by scanning the QR code on top of the bin or using this link. After completing the quiz and entering your demographic data, you will receive the lock combo to gain access to the bin.

Accepted Materials Include:

  • fruit and vegetable scraps (cores, rinds, pits)
  • tea leaves and coffee grinds
  • egg shells
  • grass clippings, weeds, flowers/herbs
