President’s Letter on Orlando Shooting

With the nation and with the LGBTQ community, we grieve the tragic and senseless loss of life in Florida over the weekend. The horrific act of violence that took place in an Orlando nightclub is now the deadliest shooting in U.S. history. Our thoughts, prayers, and loving support are with the victims and their families and friends.

Even as we witness attacks like this one all too frequently, there is nothing routine about hatred this malignant and this antagonistic to our national principles of diversity and equality. We will continue to do everything possible to protect all members of the UMB family from hate, bigotry, and fear. At the same time, we pledge to share our deep and resilient belief in the power of tolerance, respect, and love.

This act will not divide us. It will, instead, strengthen our commitment to one another and to the inclusive community we share.

Counselors are available to talk with members of the UMB family about the Orlando tragedy. Please contact the Student Counseling Center or the Employee Assistance Program to schedule an appointment.

Sincerely,

Jay A. Perman, MD
President
