UMB Closures This Week

To the University Community:

I understand that the campus closures yesterday evening, April 23, and tomorrow afternoon, April 25, have created some consternation among students, faculty, and staff. I understand, as well, that closing the campus with final exams approaching is especially disruptive.

However, I want you to know that these decisions are never made lightly; they are made only after extensive consultation with the University leadership, including the schools, the UMB Police Force, and the Baltimore Police Department. And, always, they are made with your safety in mind, as well as the safety of our neighbors.

UMB is fully supportive of citizens' right to assemble and to protest. In fact, the decision to close the campus—thereby reducing the number of cars and people on the streets—facilitates the freer movement of those who wish to participate in these rallies.

The two protests to be held tomorrow afternoon are expected to draw thousands of people. I remain convinced that closing the UMB campus tomorrow after 1:00 PM is the best option for all involved.

Sincerely,

Jay A. Perman, MD
President
