Announcing the Office of Inclusive Excellence and Institutional Effectiveness
Dear UMB Community,
We are pleased to share an important update in our ongoing commitment to the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) mission.
Effective this month, the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Strategic Planning, and Assessment will merge to form the Office of Inclusive Excellence and Institutional Effectiveness (OIEIE), which will reside within the Office of the Provost.
This structural alignment has been in the works for quite some time. By uniting the complementary priorities of the two offices, OIEIE will lead data-informed planning, organizational learning, capacity building, and evidence-based practices to expand access and opportunity, foster belonging, and support an environment in which every member of the UMB community can thrive.
We have asked Diane Forbes Berthoud, PhD, MA, who has served as UMB’s chief equity, diversity, and inclusion officer and vice president since 2021, to lead this new office. With more than 25 years of progressive academic and administrative leadership experience in the areas of assessment, organizational change, leadership development, and strategic planning, Dr. Forbes Berthoud will play an instrumental role in driving OIEIE’s efforts to ensure continuous improvement in our University’s academic and operational outcomes.
The creation of this new office reflects our University’s unwavering commitment to improve the human condition and serve the public good. We celebrate OIEIE’s launch — and we thank all those who have worked tirelessly to get us here — as it positions UMB for continued excellence and long-term resilience.
Further, we thank all of you who represent what it means to live by our University’s core values. You help make our community one in which every person can succeed.
Sincerely,
Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS
