UMB’s Commitment to Safety and Inclusivity

    Dear UMB Community,

Over the past two weeks, we have seen events unfolding on college campuses across the country. These images may stir emotions and raise concerns about safety and inclusivity. I’m writing today to express my gratitude for the many ways in which the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) community embraces and upholds our core values.

We understand that the reports and images may impact feelings of safety and well-being, and we acknowledge the complexities of the issues at hand and the passions they evoke. Please take advantage of the resources available through the Student Counseling Center and the Employee Assistance Program.

Across all facets of our institution, UMB fosters academic freedom and free speech because these concepts are important to our community of scholars and to UMB’s mission. UMB promotes core values that guide how we communicate with each other. We do not tolerate speech that constitutes unlawful harassment or discrimination. Any University policy violation should be reported on this EthicsPoint webpage or by calling 866-594-5220.

My priority is the safety and security of the UMB community. It is imperative that UMB is a safe, orderly, and professional learning, research, and work environment for all members of our University community, as well as our neighbors, hospital partners, and the patients and clients we serve. We have a dedicated team of professionals, including the student affairs deans, Office of Emergency Management, and UMB Police and Public Safety, who continuously engage in preparedness activities to ensure the safety and security of our campus. For those who are interested, we’ve recently reviewed and updated our building and space access guidelines.

Let us remain committed to our shared core values and to creating a more inclusive and respectful community. Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our University’s mission.

    Sincerely,

    Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS

    President
