UMB Police Update on Shooting Outside of UMMC

Dear Colleagues:

I know that many of you are concerned about the incident that occurred this morning outside the University of Maryland Medical Center and I want to be sure that you know the details of what took place.

Shortly after 7 a.m., an employee of the University of Maryland School of Medicine was shot and seriously injured near the ambulance bays on West Redwood Street just west of Penn Street. He was quickly taken to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and is still undergoing treatment at this writing.

When the shooting occurred, two University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Force officers were just across the street, responding to a fire alarm call at Howard Hall. They heard the shots and saw a suspect running west toward Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and gave chase. The officers caught the suspect in the 800 block of Hollins St. and took a handgun from him.

We believe that this was a targeted attack and that the victim knew the suspect; no other members of the University community were in danger.

Students who may be affected and are in need of support are urged to speak with their family, peers, and other resources and/or to contact the UMB Student Counseling Center at 410-328-8404 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. from Monday through Friday, or call to receive after-hours support. Faculty and staff can contact the Employee Assistance Program at 667-214-1555 or after hours at 410-241-1488. More information regarding counseling and crisis care resources is available at http://www.umaryland.edu/counseling. Additional resources also are available at http://www.umaryland.edu/counseling/crisis-care-resources.

While this was an unsettling incident, I assure you that your safety is our top priority and that we remain confident in our abilities to respond to any situation or threat. We are here to serve you.

Sincerely,

Alice K. Cary, MS

UMB Chief of Police
