Preceptor Fellowship

Fellowship Overview

The Preceptor Fellowship is a 6-month preceptor development program, created with the goal of advancing clinical education, creating a community of interprofessional preceptors, providing opportunities for networking, and promoting excellence in precepting and PA education.

The next cohort of the Preceptor Fellowship begins in January 2027 and ends in June 2027. Leveraging spaced and scaffolded learning strategies, fellows will participate in synchronous and asynchronous activities involving every-other-week (120-minute duration) active learning sessions and self-paced online learning. Working with dedicated mentors, fellows will also have an opportunity to produce applied scholarly products on topics such as quality improvement, implementation science, clinical medicine, leadership, health professions education, and health systems science.

For the 2027 year, selected fellows from Maryland will be remunerated in two installments of $2,500 each, to offset their clinical practice time and use towards professional development.* Additionally, fellows can earn more than 20 hours of category 1 CME for completion of all fellowship requirements over the six months. The estimated time commitment will be 50-55 hours over a 6-month period. 

*Fellows earn the first $5,000 for successfully completing the fellowship. Beginning July 1, 2027, fellows become eligible for an additional $5,000 stipend ($2,500 after 1 precepted student from a Maryland PA program, $2500 after the 2nd precepted student from a Maryland PA program). The second student must be completed by May 1, 2028 to ensure payment in the 2027-2028 fiscal year.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the PALLA Preceptor Fellowship, a prospective fellow should:

• Have an active license to practice medicine in the US, currently certified as a PA, NP, CNMW, or MD/DO.
• Demonstrate a desire for clinical teaching and a willingness to precept PA students upon completion of the fellowship.
• Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States of America.
• Preference will be given to applicants with the highest promise of precepting Maryland PA students.

Selection Criteria

Fellows will be selected based on the following criteria:

• Potential for precepting students from Maryland PA Programs
• Alignment of the fellow’s career objectives with PALLA’s vision and mission for advancing PA education, leadership, research, and policy
• Specialty areas in demand by Maryland PA Programs
• Fellows who work and plan to precept in medically underserved communities
• An expressed commitment to EDI (equity, diversity, and inclusion) in clinical
  learning environments
