This is a common challenge for many families who have been taught that LGBTQ+ identities are wrong. Much of what has been taught over the years about LGBTQ+ identities was not accurate. We have learned much more about sexual orientation and gender identity development and have more information and resources for families than ever before. Re-learning the new information on sexual orientation and gender identity is not easy, but it is an important step in supporting your LGBTQ+ child. To start, take a look at our animation on the importance of family support: Support for LGBTQ+ Youth Starts at Home. We also recommend you visit https://oregonlgbtqresources.org/ to learn more about the important role families have in their LGBTQ+ child’s wellness.
As a parent, or other family member, the flood of new information may be difficult to process. It is common to feel challenged by the new information and need a space to process your feelings honestly and away from your child. It may be helpful to look into affirming faith communities that can provide that essential support. The Human Rights Campaign Foundation keeps a list of affirming Faith Communities and Resources that can provide help. We also recommend your local PFLAG chapter as a resource. PFLAG stands for Parents and Family of Lesbians and Gays and is a support group of families supporting other families. This groups is facilitated by people who have experienced similar circumstances to what you are experiencing now and can offer a great deal of support.
