New Graduates Speak Out

Julie Brownley, School of Medicine, MD

Julie-BrownleyUMB’s mission is to improve the human condition and serve the public good. How do you plan to do that as a new graduate?

“My goal is to wind up in primary care medicine. In doing that I feel you are at the very front line of health and medicine and it’s the place where you can prevent the most harm. I hope to help patients at the ground level if they are ill or their health is in danger, working with preventative health measures.”

Did you also do some community work?

“We have a core rotation that allows us to take part in community-based medicine. We work in underserved areas so that was a critical part of my training. I was busy in my spare time with my daughter [Lydia, almost 3] so toward the end of my training I didn’t do as much outreach. There were plenty of opportunities, which was wonderful. My classmates got involved in a lot of activities that were helping the community health-wise.”
