Move & Manage Data

To manage access, data ingress, data egress, and collaboration requirements, SRE IT can create folders based on the following scenarios.
Common Project Folder
Standard shared workspace for individual users or small project teams.
Ingress Project Folder
Dedicated location for receiving and storing incoming datasets.
Egress Project Folder
Automated folder for transferring approved project data to the RIC team for review.
REDCap General Egress Folder
Automated folder for transferring approved project data to the REDCap Administration team for review.
General Collaboration Folder
Common Folder
Intended for an individual user or a small project team.
A single shared folder is created by SRE IT for all project data, work and collaboration
Frequent Data Ingress and/or Egress
Used when data must be regularly received, reviewed, or transferred.
Ingress Folder
Created by SRE IT to store incoming datasets and files.
Egress Folder
Created by SRE IT to automatically transfer folder contents to the RIC Team for review.
Transfers occur on a scheduled basis every four hours.
Egress schedule - 10 AM, 2 PM, 6 PM, 10 PM, 2 AM, 6 AM
REDCap Egress Folder
Created by SRE IT to automatically transfer folder contents to the REDCap Administration Team for review.
Transfers occur on a scheduled basis every four hours.

Data Mover

Data Mover
The SRE DataMover tool helps approved Secure Research Environment (SRE) users move files into the SRE. In limited, approved cases, it may also be used to move files out of the SRE.
DataMover is intended for files that do not contain protected health information (PHI), personally identifiable information (PII), or other restricted data. To help protect sensitive information, files moved out of the SRE are scanned before they are released.

Move Files Into the SRE

  • Access the : outside-datamover.umaryland.edu
  • upload the file
  • log into the SRE and access the file inside-datamover.umaryland.edu
  • Move Files Out of the SRE if a File Is Flagged

The SRE DataMover tool helps approved Secure Research Environment (SRE) users move files into the SRE. In limited, approved cases, it may also be used to move files out of the SRE.

DataMover is intended for files that do not contain protected health information (PHI), personally identifiable information (PII), or other restricted data. To help protect sensitive information, files moved out of the SRE are scanned before they are released.

Move Files Into the SRE

Use DataMover to upload approved files from your local computer into your SRE project.

From outside the SRE, go to https://outside-datamover.umaryland.edu/ and sign in with your SRE-enabled account.

Upload the file you want to move. After processing is complete, sign in to the SRE and download the file from https://inside-datamover.umaryland.edu/. File processing may take up to 10 minutes.

Move Files Out of the SRE

Moving files out of the SRE is more restricted because the environment may contain sensitive research data. At this time, only Principal Investigators (PIs) and Data Stewards may request access to move files out of the SRE.

To request access, complete the egress access request form. After you submit the form, the SRE IT team will contact you to review your request, discuss your intended use, and explain how DataMover works.

Important: Do not use DataMover to move files that contain PHI, PII, or other restricted information unless you have received specific approval and guidance from the SRE IT team.

Request Data Mover Egress Access

For step-by-step instructions and additional details, visit the DataMover webpage.

Inside the SRE - Your desktop will have 2 folders labeled:

  • "<project ID> Ingress"
  • "<project ID> Egress"

These folders act as your data's landing zone and gateway out of the environment, respectively.

The ingress folder is available to all team members and those added to the IRB protocol.  The entire team can work out of the ingress folder

Outside the SRE - You will use a dedicated Microsoft Teams team channel for your project. From the channels file tab, you can upload data to be ingressed, or download reviewed and approved egressed data.

User sessions will be auto logged off after 3 hours of inactivity.  If you have any questions or concerns, please email sre-support@umaryland.edu.
