About Markus
I’ve always known I wanted to help people, and my personality naturally draws me to work where I can see real-time, tangible impact. When friends introduced me to CHHS, I was immediately intrigued, and after joining, I quickly realized it was the right fit. I could see the direct results of our efforts in helping organizations and communities become more resilient, while also having the opportunity, at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, to study complex challenges and take a forward-looking approach to solving them. One of the most impactful initiatives I’ve worked on has been growing CHHS’ Cyber Program. When we started, cybersecurity was often seen as purely technical, but we recognized the importance of non-technical aspects like coordination, policy, and governance. By applying emergency management best practices to cybersecurity, we’ve helped clients navigate these challenges more effectively. I’ve also loved teaching cybersecurity law and policy, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see new graduates go out into the world ready to make a difference. What makes CHHS truly special, though, is the combination of meaningful work and a supportive, collaborative environment filled with kind, exceptionally talented people—I know that’s something many of us here deeply value.
What is your working style?
Above all else, I want to be collaborative. No one can solve problems alone, and meaningful change can only be accomplished by working together. I want everyone involved to have the opportunity to contribute and I will listen. For any new project, it’s important to first listen, take time to understand the situation, and then move forward thoughtfully—rather than rushing ahead without careful consideration. When people work together, they can achieve wonderful results.
How long have you been with CHHS?
I’ve been with CHHS since 2008! To be honest, I didn’t think I’d be here for this long when I first started, but this place is special. Now I can’t imagine working anywhere else. Many of my CHHS colleagues have had similar experiences. It’s a testament to the work we do and the wonderful people with whom I get to work.
How do you spend your time outside of work?
I like to tend to my vegetable garden. It’s good to be outdoors and to get my hands dirty. Tending to my plants, watching them grow, and eventually enjoying their fruits is very satisfying. But when the squirrels, rabbits, and birds get to them, I get very upset and my kids end up calling me “Mr. McGregor”!
