Alexa Mayo, MLS
Interim Dean of the Health Sciences and Human Services Library
Alexa Mayo was named interim associate vice provost and dean of the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL) in June 2026, marking her second stint in that role since 2023. She also serves as the assistant dean for research and information services at the HSHSL.
Mayo has over 25 years of experience working with health information within research settings. While at HSHSL, she has served as co-principal investigator and director of the Network of the National Library of Medicine’s Region 1 and the Network Web Services Office under a cooperative agreement with the National Library of Medicine. She also has served as principal investigator or project manager for multiyear-funded projects with community-based partners. These projects partner with community members to promote health equity.
She is active in the Medical Library Association (MLA), serving as a member of MLA’s Public Services Caucus, International Cooperation Caucus, and Leadership and Management Caucus. Mayo also is active in the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries and the University System of Maryland and the Affiliated Institutions Council of Library Directors.
Mayo has authored or co-authored more than 60 chapters, articles, presentations, and posters. Her professional interests include developing innovative research services, teaching and learning, and developing projects to promote health equity.
She received her Master of Library Science degree from Simmons College in Boston and her bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
