Mark A. Reynolds, DDS, PhD, MA

Mark A. Reynolds, DDS, PhD, MA

Interim Provost and Executive Vice President

Mark Reynolds was appointed interim provost and executive vice president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) in August 2026 after serving as dean of the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) for 12 years.

As provost, Reynolds reports directly to the UMB president, is the second-ranking official at the University, and serves as chief academic officer, working collaboratively and in close coordination with the deans of UMB’s seven schools.

Reynolds provides leadership and oversight in the development and implementation of all plans, policies, and procedures that support and advance UMB’s strategies and priorities in alignment with its mission, strategic plan, and accreditation standards at the school and institutional levels.

The provost also is the University’s chief strategy officer, oversees strategic planning at the institutional level, and is UMB’s liaison to the Maryland Higher Education Commission, the University System of Maryland, and other external agencies and organizations.

He co-chaired UMB’s 2025 Middle States self-study, which led to a successful reaccreditation, and led the dental school through a successful Commission on Dental Accreditation self-study in 2026.

Reynolds served UMSOD in a number of capacities for 30 years, including director of the Advanced Dental Education Program in Periodontics and chair of the Department of Periodontics. Reynolds was named interim dean in 2013 and hired as permanent dean in 2014.

Reynolds’ research has focused primarily on periodontal tissue regeneration and the effect of chronic periodontitis on systemic health, supported by a 30-plus-year record of National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding that began in 1992 when he earned a competitive five-year NIH Individual Dentist Scientist Award to support his residency and PhD studies.

His research often has been multi-institutional, including collaborators at NIH and other universities. An academic dentist, Reynolds has published over 230 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, with nearly 14,000 citations, and received the American Academy of Periodontology R. Earl Robinson Periodontal Regeneration Award in 2004 and 2016.

Reynolds’ leadership has extended regionally and nationally through service on NIH study sections (standing member); editorial boards; committees, including the FDA’s Medical Devices Advisory Committee and the Dental Products Panel (chair); and boards, including the American Board of Periodontology (diplomate, director, and co-chair) and the American Academy of Periodontology (trustee).

Reynolds earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1986 and a certificate in periodontics in 1995, both from UMSOD, and his PhD in oral and experimental pathology in 1999 from the University of Maryland School of Graduate Studies. He also has a master’s degree in community-clinical psychology and a bachelor’s degree in psychology, both from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
