Bio
Dr. Birukov graduated from the Second Moscow State Medical School in 1986 and received his PhD degree in the Russian National Cardiology Research Center in vascular biology and biochemistry in 1991. During his tenure at the Russian National Cardiology Research Center, Dr. Birukov initiated his studies in vascular cell mechano-transduction, which he further advanced during his visits to Baker Medical Research Institute in Melbourne, Australia, Center for Vascular biology in Basel, Switzerland and INSERM U141 Unit in Paris, France. After moving to U.S., Dr. Birukov participated in cloning and characterization of functional properties of non-muscle myosin light chain kinase in the laboratory of Martin Watterson, Northwestern University. He then joined Joe G.N. (Skip) Garcia group at Johns Hopkins University to focus on lung endothelial cell pathobiology, and in 2005 he moved to the University of Chicago to continue his program on mechanotransduction and novel vaso-protective effects of oxidized phospholipids.
