Please introduce yourself and describe your role at UMB.
My name is Rachael Welch, and I am the Compliance Coordinator for the School of Nursing. I am approaching my third year at UMB and will be completing my term as Acting Chair of Staff Council at UMSON this June. In this role, I serve as the staff representative on both the Governance Council and the Academic and Student Affairs Council (ASAC), helping ensure staff perspectives are included in school wide decision making. In my compliance role, I was foundational in UMSON’s transition from CastleBranch to Exxat, supporting a smoother, more integrated system for compliance and clinical placements management.
Why are you interested in serving on the Staff Senate?
I want to serve on Staff Senate because my time at UMB has shown me how transformative shared governance can be when staff voices are truly valued. As Acting Chair of Staff Council, I’ve seen how thoughtful collaboration strengthens our community, and it has deepened my commitment to this work. My background in culinary nutrition and decades in food service and grocery retail have shaped my understanding of how systems influence people’s daily lives — from the food they can access to the conditions they work in — and I’m passionate about community centered approaches and system level healing. President Jarrell’s call for a more vibrant, connected, and people centered campus resonates with me, and I want to help ensure staff perspectives shape that vision. Baltimore has been my home for over a decade, and UMB is where I’ve grown as a leader; joining the Staff Senate is a natural next step, allowing me to continue this work with curiosity, a willingness to listen, and a genuine commitment to collaborating with colleagues
who bring expertise, creativity, and heart to shared challenges.
What do you hope to accomplish during your term?
I hope to strengthen staff voice in shared governance and ensure that decisions across UMB reflect the lived experiences of the people who keep the University running. My goal is to support greater transparency and help advance equity, well-being, and a more connected, people centered campus—work that aligns with the direction UMB is striving toward.
