1. Please introduce yourself and describe your role at UMB.
Hi, I’m Laura, and I serve as a Senior Research Project Manager at UMB. I currently manage an NIH-funded study that focuses on behavioral and nutritional interventions for older adults living with HIV. My role includes overseeing recruitment and operations, managing study finances, supporting grant renewals, and collaborating with investigators and stakeholders across departments. I also contribute to long-term strategy and implementation efforts to ensure our research has both scientific impact and real-world value.
2. Why are you interested in serving on the Staff Senate?
I’m passionate about creating spaces where people feel heard, supported, and empowered. Serving on the Staff Senate is an opportunity to be part of that work at the university level. I’m especially interested in strengthening communication between leadership and staff, advocating for professional development opportunities, and helping shape policies that reflect the diverse needs and experiences of our campus community.
3. What do you hope to accomplish during your term?
During my term, I hope to represent staff voices with intention and integrity. I’d like to help foster greater transparency around decisions that affect staff and contribute to initiatives that promote equity, well-being, and a stronger sense of community. I’m also eager to support collaborative efforts across departments that lead to creative, meaningful change.
4. Describe your hobbies and interests outside of work.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time outdoors - whether it’s biking, hiking, or relaxing at the beach. My dog, Klaus, is often my adventure partner on these outings. I’m also a big fan of games and game shows—Press Your Luck, Taboo, board games with friends, and especially bingo, which is definitely a favorite of mine. I use Canva as a creative outlet and a way to express ideas visually, and lately I’ve been really interested in trying out fishing and crabbing.
