Please introduce yourself and describe your role at UMB.
My name is Kris Nicklas, and I am an IT Training and Communication Specialist with the Center for Information Technology Services (CITS). I specialize in developing accessible, user centered training and documentation for faculty, staff, and the broader campus community. Much of my work is centered
on web and document accessibility, ADA Title II compliance, security related communications, and translating complex technical requirements into practical, easy to understand guidance. I work closely with campus partners to support compliance, improve digital experiences, and help people feel more confident using UMB’s technology tools. I joined the UMB community almost 3 years ago, but I have spent my entire career working in education and mission-driven nonprofit organizations, with a strong focus on training, professional development, and community support. Prior to joining UMB, I worked in nonprofit education and family support services, as well as secondary education. I currently live in Baltimore City and bring both a local perspective and a deep commitment to public education and service.
Why are you interested in serving on the Staff Senate?
As a Staff Senator, my goal is to thoughtfully represent staff voices and promote a collaborative, transparent, and inclusive campus environment. By joining the Staff Senate, I would be able to connect with colleagues throughout campus, gain insight into the challenges and opportunities staff experience, and advocate for beneficial changes. I appreciate teamwork and shared governance, and I believe that open communication between staff and leadership makes the university stronger.
What do you hope to accomplish during your term?
During my term as a Staff Senator/CUSS Representative, I hope to serve as a thoughtful advocate for staff by strengthening communication, building connections across departments, and ensuring staff perspectives are meaningfully represented in shared governance decisions. Having worked in higher education, nonprofit, and IT training environments, I understand the value of inclusive dialogue and the importance of translating complex policies into clear, actionable information for staff at all levels. I hope to listen actively to the concerns and ideas of my colleagues and help elevate those voices within CUSS, particularly around issues of workplace equity, professional development, accessibility, and operational transparency. Collaboration is especially important to me—I want to help break down silos between units and support stronger partnerships across campus that improve the day to day experience of staff at UMB. Ultimately, I view this role as an opportunity to give back to an institution that has invested in me professionally. By
contributing my communication, training, and problem solving skills, I hope to help foster a more connected, informed, and supportive campus community where staff feel heard, valued, and empowered.
Describe your hobbies and interests outside of work.
I am a mom to two teen daughters and a proud Girl Scout, roles that reflect how much I value family, service, and community. Outside of work and volunteering, I enjoy spending time outdoors - especially hiking with my dog, Juno, and gardening. I am a self-proclaimed nerd and a lifelong learner; whether I’m tracking a bill through the state senate or teaching myself another language, I love exploring new topics and deepening my understanding. I consider myself deeply justice-oriented and never shy away from speaking up; I believe strongly in using my voice to advocate for causes I care about and to stand up for fairness and inclusion. Whether I’m parenting, volunteering, exploring nature, or advocating for positive change, I try to lead with empathy, purpose, and integrity.
