Terria McClain

Administrative Specialist
School of Nursing
1. Please introduce yourself and describe your role at UMB.
My name is Terria McClain, and I currently serve as the Administrative Specialist in the Department of Family and Community Health at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. In my role, I manage key administrative and operational processes that support faculty, adjuncts, and graduate teaching assistants. My journey in higher education has been guided by a strong commitment to leadership, professional growth, and advocacy for staff success.
2. Why are you interested in serving on the Staff Senate?
I am excited to express my interest in becoming a Staff Senator at UMB because I am passionate about fostering an environment where staff feel supported, valued, and empowered to grow. Having participated in several leadership programs, including Emerging Leaders, Building Bridges Across Maryland, and UMBrella, I have gained the skills and knowledge necessary to be an effective representative for my colleagues. As the Professional Development Chair, I contribute to staff development initiatives and work to create a positive and productive environment for my colleagues. My experiences serving as the Professional Development Chair for the UMSON Staff Council have reinforced my belief in the power of strong staff advocacy, and I want to extend that work to the broader university community. I am also excited to be a new member of University of Maryland, Baltimore Professional Administratives Committed to Excellence (UMBPACE)!
3. What do you hope to accomplish during your term?
As a Staff Senator, my primary goal is to advocate for policies that enhance the work-life quality of staff, expand access to professional development opportunities, and promote career growth. I believe that every staff member should have the resources and support needed to thrive in their roles. I will work to ensure that staff voices are heard, concerns are addressed, and new opportunities are created for professional advancement. By fostering open communication and collaboration, I hope to contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and engagement at UMB.
4. Describe your hobbies and interests outside of work.
Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, spending time with my family and friends, and organizing events that bring people together. Whether it’s planning family gatherings or hosting professional development workshops, I find fulfillment in creating spaces that encourage connection and growth. My passion for community building extends beyond the workplace, and I believe that strong relationships—both personal and professional—are key to success and fulfillment. I am eager for the opportunity to serve as a Staff Senator and make a meaningful impact at UMB. Thank you for your consideration!
