    Amanda N. Knott

    Amanda N. Knott

    Asst Director, Sponsored Program Admin
    Central Administration

Please introduce yourself and describe your role at UMB.

I have worked at UMB for almost seven years in research administration. I started at the Institute of Human Virology as a grants and contracts specialist, managing both pre and post-award grant actions for Basic Science and International Projects. I recently took a role in the central office as an Assistant Director in the Sponsored Programs Administration. This position has allowed me to support the campus community in ways that I had hoped for and in ways that I could not have predicted. Due to the President's executive orders, I found myself in the primary role of supporting administrators and researchers through the process of submitting award revisions to address federal administration priorities. This is an ongoing process, and while challenging, it is rewarding to help others through this difficult time. As the SPA Grants Assistant Director, I have greatly enjoyed addressing PI and grants administrators’ concerns and providing new training to the research administration community. Prior to working at UMB, I was the Director of Grants and Data for the Community Action Agency in Westminster, Maryland, where I wrote all agency grants for seven different human services programs and managed the data intake and entry for homeless services in Carroll County. My biggest professional accomplishments include writing and winning a Community Development Block Grant and serving in the Peace Corps, where I helped a group of women to reopen an early childhood center that provided food and education daily for children under 5.

Why are you interested in serving on the Staff Senate?

I have always admired UMB as my place of employment for its courage to address the current issues of the time. It may be by sharing a supportive email to let you know they care or by forming committees and hosting town halls that lend an ear and provide a forum. One feels as an employee that the university sees you not only as a staff member, but as an individual with a unique background and experience. Support from UMB does not only come through their words in an email, but by their actions through the many educational and training opportunities they offer its employees and through their benefits. UMB seems like a person to me with whom I have a relationship, and they more closely exemplify their mission and values than any other organization where I have worked.  I would be proud to be a part of deepening UMB’s mission and core values through advocacy as a Staff Senator.  I also stand ready to learn about the university system and policies, so I may further my understanding and become a better leader.

What do you hope to accomplish during your term?

Initially, I plan to listen and learn more about the university system and how policies are made and improved. Ultimately, if I can accomplish supporting existing policies that are good or advocating for new policies/changes on campus that improve the professional and personal lives of UMB staff, the university system, Baltimore City, and Maryland, that will be meaningful to me and a good use of my time and efforts. It is important to help others, and I personally enjoy empowering others in their professional and personal journeys.

Describe your hobbies and interests outside of work.

I enjoy ballroom dancing, caring for our Nigerian Dwarf Goats, spending a ton of time with my kids, and indulging their interests, volunteering, and traveling… traveling… traveling…
