Letters to the UMB Community

Statement on Robb Elementary Shooting

May 25, 2022

Dear UMB Community,

It's only been 10 days since the horrible violence in Buffalo, N.Y., and our country has seen another terrible instance of violence at Robb Elementary School in Ulvade, Texas, where at least 19 students and two adults died in a shooting. I am profoundly saddened and angry that gun violence continues to plague our society, around the country and right here in Baltimore.

University System of Maryland Chancellor Jay A. Perman, MD, shared a statement this morning that I hope you will read.

Please know that the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) has resources to support you including the Student Counseling Center and the Employee Assistance Program if needed.

Our hearts go out to the families of those killed, injured, and traumatized by the shooting. At UMB, our mission is to improve the human condition and serve the public good. We denounce acts of violence, racism, and hatred, and we must act to end them to create a more peaceful and just society.

Sincerely,

Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS

President
