Letters to the UMB Community

Representing UMB in Annapolis

February 16, 2023

Dear UMB Community,

Over the past week, I have spent much of my time in Annapolis, preparing for and testifying about the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) budget request for Fiscal Year 2024, and having meetings with members of the Maryland General Assembly. It’s a duty I have as your president, but it’s also an honor because I get to share with our elected officials how UMB is continuing to meet our mission to improve the human condition and serve the public good.

I talked about the nearly 7,000 students enrolled in 90 degree and certificate programs, and UMB’s impact on Maryland’s economy. I spoke about our grants and contracts — money that funds our research, training, and service activities. I shared how we are meeting the needs of the next generation of professionals with our degree programs, increased class sizes, innovative partnerships, and workforce initiatives.

Legislators heard that UMB takes our role as an anchor institution very seriously. I shared highlights from dozens of programs across UMB’s seven schools that are positively impacting our communities. You can read UMB’s submitted testimony here.

It is a privilege to represent UMB in Annapolis — and everywhere I go. Thank you for your commitment to our mission.

Sincerely,

Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS

President
