Announcing Search for the Francis King Carey School of Law Dean

October 20, 2021

Dear UMB Community,

I am pleased to announce that the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) has commenced the national search for the next dean of the Francis King Carey School of Law. The next dean will succeed Donald B. Tobin, JD, who announced in September his decision to step down at the end of the 2021-2022 academic year. He will return to full-time teaching as a member of the Carey School of Law faculty.

Successful candidates must be prepared to lead the law school’s successful program and clinics, as well as build on the initiatives that have significantly increased the school’s community impact under Dean Tobin. We look forward to having a diverse candidate pool of accomplished academic leaders excited to join the UMB family.

Roger J. Ward, EdD, JD, MSL, MPA, provost, executive vice president, and dean of the Graduate School, will chair the search committee with Leslie Meltzer Henry, PhD, JD, MSc, professor of law, serving as co-chair. The firm Isaacson, Miller, which specializes in recruiting leaders for mission-driven organizations, will assist the committee in the national search.

More information about the search, including the position description, a timeline of events, and more, will be available soon on the UMB website.

Sincerely,

Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS

President
