Announcing Search for Next Dean of the School of Medicine

August 25, 2021

Dear UMB Community,

I am pleased to announce that the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is commencing a national search for the next dean of the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) to succeed E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, who announced his retirement in March. We expect to name the new dean by spring 2022.

I know that we will have a diverse candidate pool of accomplished academic leaders excited to join the UMB family. Successful candidates must be prepared to lead the school in its academic and clinical missions, work closely with the University of Maryland Medical System, and represent UMSOM effectively with its many stakeholders, especially those in our Baltimore community.

Claire M. Fraser, PhD, Dean’s Endowed Professor of Medicine and director of the Institute for Genome Sciences, will chair the search committee. The Academic Healthcare Practice of Korn Ferry, led by Warren Ross, MD, will assist the committee in the search.

More information about the search, including the position description, a timeline of events for the search, and other information, will be available soon on the UMB homepage. Nominations, including self-nominations, may be submitted to Korn Ferry via email at alana.aisthorpe@kornferry.com.

Sincerely,

Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS

President
