The third GLOBALtimore Fellows cohort includes faculty members from four UMB schools – Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy – who will take their interest in curricular internationalization to the next level by integrating global concepts into new virtual or existing courses in their respective schools.

Disaster Management: Interprofessional Collaborative Education

Disasters can pose a major threat to human life and operations. The rising frequency of these catastrophic events creates an alarming burden on emergency support systems. Given the unique challenges associated with each disaster event, it is critical to minimize resource gaps and prioritize strategies to augment existing response systems. The practice of working in teams with collaborative partners, as opposed to working in silos, will reduce impact and save costs. The current state of the COVID-19 pandemic highlights the importance of healthcare to the well-being of our global communities. Therefore, a high-performing interprofessional collaborative education on disaster management is paramount.
Special Care Dentistry: A Global Perspective

For patients with special healthcare needs (SHCN), dentistry has been demonstrated to be the most common unmet healthcare need. While special care dentistry (SCD) is a dental specialty in several other countries, such as the UK, Brazil, and Australia, it is not a recognized specialty in the U.S. This project will develop a course to evaluate and investigate methods of SCD from a global perspective to understand how dental care is implemented for patients with SHCN around the globe, and how these models can be implemented to improve processes, care, and oral health outcomes for patients with SHCN in the United States.
Professional Issues: Global Health in Physical Therapy

In Professional Issues II (DPTE 515), first year physical therapy students are introduced to global health. We discuss the different health systems in a variety of countries and universal health coverage. The GLOBALtimore Teaching Fellowship will provide resources to update and expand this content to be more contemporary and meaningful. Global health is discussed with both an international and a local perspective. The fellowship will provide the tools to investigate whether the COIL could be utilized in the DPT program.
Global Pulse in DD&I Data Dissemination and Implementation Science

In our teaching and research, we emphasize evidence-based approaches to prescribing, health care, public health, and policy decisions. This evidence is based on available data, often circumscribed to a specific setting, geography or system. This course will introduce the types of data with a global reach, the various global data networks, and the AI methods that are used to leverage these data networks to elicit early safety signals, and possibly pre-empt a negative health outcome, e.g. the next pandemic. Speakers will include local and international experts.
A Global Perspective on Health Outcomes Assessment

The course on Health Outcomes Assessment provides an understanding of the principles for measurement of health and health outcomes. Students gain a familiarity with various measurement types (e.g., COA, PRO, ObsRO, ClinRO, PerfO); measure concepts, including instruments used to evaluate health status, quality of life, patient satisfaction, function and disability, and compliance/adherence; and their properties. As a GLOBALtimore Teaching Fellow, I envision introducing methodological platforms developed in Europe such as COSMIN and Biblio-PRO in the course and inviting experts from Europe and Latin America to deliver some of the content of the course. In addition, at present the course is very focused on the FDA roadmap and FDA guides to measure health outcomes. Other countries have roadmaps and guides that should be reviewed as well to introduce some critical thinking and a more global perspective.
