Stop the Bleed

Knowing how to control bleeding from a serious injury is important knowledge for everyone to have. This simple training can be taken in-person or online and can save a life. In fact, UMB Deputy Director of Emergency Management, Christopher Stanton, MS, used his Stop the Bleed training to save a gunshot victim! Read the story.

Training

The Stop the Bleed course teaches individuals how to provide vital initial actions to stop uncontrolled bleeding in emergency situations. The Bleeding Control Basics course gives participants the necessary tools to become an empowered initial responder.

Online Training

The Stop the Bleed Interactive Course is a 25-minute online lecture presentation. This video goes through three methods of bleeding control using video demonstrations, interactive learning, and spontaneous quizzes. The course is free and can be taken multiple times.

In-Person Training

In-person Stop the Bleed training is offered at the University of Maryland Medical Center, located at 22 South Greene Street, Baltimore, Maryland, 21201. Participants will learn proper bleeding control techniques using their hands, dressings, and tourniquets. The course is free, but registration is required. Learn more and register.

Additional off-campus courses can be found through the national Stop the Bleed campaign website

  • Identify any nearby tools to assist you such as a publicly placed bleeding control kit or everyday items that can be used to control bleeding.
  • Use your hands to apply direct pressure at the site of the wound to stop bleeding
  • Pack a deep wound with cloth or gauze to control bleeding
