Same-Day Appointments

Same-day appointments will be offered during business days at 2 p.m. to increase availability of services and maximize SCC resources. Students are encouraged to schedule a same-day appointment as early as 7:30 a.m., as these appointments are on a first come first serve basis. Counselors review students’ records of previous appointments to provide the best care for you. No psychiatry and medication management services are provided during same-day appointments.

Request a same day service appointment

1. What are same-day appointments?

Same-day appointments mean that you will be able to talk to a therapist the same day you seek help. The appointments are Monday through Friday at 2 p.m. and must be requested online.

2. When are same-day appointments offered?

Same-day appointments are offered Monday-Fridays at 2p.m. You can indicate your preference for in person or virtual meeting when completing the forms, though sometimes virtual is required based on counselor availability. The SCC has a private space that students can request to use to receive virtual appointments if they are on-campus and do not have a private location.

3. When can I schedule a same-day appointment?

You should request the same-day appointment on the day that you are available to meet. The online scheduling request system will be active at 7:30 am Monday-Friday. You must request an appointment at least 1 hour before you would like to meet. Same-Day appointments are offered at 2:00 pm Monday through Friday. SCC will offered extended hours for same-day appointments during the end of the spring and fall semester.

4. What is the online scheduling system used to request same-day appointments?

The SCC uses Titanium Schedule, an electronic medical record (EMR) system that is HIPAA-compliant and used in many universities counseling centers. The link to request online to schedule a same-day appointment can be found here https://tiforms.umaryland.edu/TitaniumWeb/. The information that you provide through this system is securely stored with the Student Counseling Center and is not accessible to any faculty or staff member outside of the counseling center staff. Titanium is not connected to your academic or medical record.

5. What happens after I request online a same-day appointment?

If you request a virtual appointment, a SCC counselor will send you a Zoom invitation for that appointment prior to the start of your appointment. The Zoom invitation will have the title Virtual Same-Day Appointment. If you request an in-person appointment, a SCC counselor will send you a meeting request for that appointment prior to the start of your appointment. The meeting invitation will have the title In-Person Same-Day Appointment. If you request an in-person appointment and no SCC counselor is available in office to meet, a member of the SCC will contact you by phone and/or email to see if you are available to meet for a virtual appointment.

6. What if I want to meet for a same-day appointment, but there are no openings through the online scheduling system?

We encourage you to try the online scheduling system the next day that you are available to meet. If you have an urgent concern and cannot wait to meet another day, please call our main number (410-328-8404) and ask to speak with the clinician on coverage. An SCC counselor will gather information from you and explore options that might best fit your needs for an urgent concern.

7. What if I schedule a same-day appointment, but am unable to attend?

Please call our main number (410-328-8404) and cancel your appointment. There is no charge for canceling a same-day appointment, however Executive Director may contact you if you have frequent cancellations of same-day appointments to discuss if other modalities of counseling would be a better fit for you.

8. How long are same-day appointments?

Same-day appointments will last 30-45 minutes depending on the type of concern you have. We encourage you to prioritize your goal for the visit as the counselor will focus on that one goal to offer strategies, support, and recommendations. Towards the end of the appointment, the counselor will discuss next steps with you. These steps may include connecting you with the SCC Referral Assistance Services to find an outside provider, utilizing additional same-day appointments in the future, or referral to other departments/resources at UMB or off-campus.

9. What if complete the brief electronic forms and see that there are no same-day appointments available that match my schedule?

We encourage you to try the online scheduling system the next day that you are available to meet. If you do not schedule a same-day appointment, your forms will be deleted from our system. If you have an urgent concern and cannot wait to meet another day, please call our main number (410-328-8404) and ask to speak with the clinician on coverage. An SCC counselor will gather information from you and explore options that might best fit your needs for an urgent concern.

10. Can I use same-day appointments to meet with an SCC psychiatrist?

No, referrals for brief mediation management services are only made by SCC counselors after consultation with the SCC Clinical Team. If you are recommended for brief medication management services through the SCC, your appointments with your psychiatrist will be scheduled. Psychiatry appointments are offered either virtually or in-person, depending on the clinical recommendations by your psychiatrist and your preference for modality.
