Record Retention Statement

General Record Retention Guidelines

Most records should be retained for three (3) years or until audited, whichever is longer.* The Office of Legislative Audits most recent compliance audit of UMB covered the period of July 1, 2018 – August 31, 2021. The final audit report was issued March 1, 2023. 

*Keep in mind that other federal or state regulations that may dictate longer retention periods. Additionally, for records that are grant-/contract-related, the grant/contract documents may dictate the record retention requirements.
