The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Council for the Arts & Culture is a group of faculty, staff, students, and community members appointed by the UMB president whose mission is to promote the rich history of our institution and surrounding neighborhoods and to celebrate the creative talents of the University community, thereby raising awareness of the links between the arts and sciences.

Cracking the Code Documentary

Documentary ‘Cracking the Code’ to Be Screened at Charles Theatre on Oct. 23

The documentary “Cracking the Code: Phil Sharp and the Biotech Revolution” will be screened at the Charles Theatre in Baltimore on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m., with a panel discussion to follow.

Narrated by actor Mark Ruffalo, “Cracking the Code” is an inspiring story of vision, perseverance, and the power of science to change the world. Sharp’s journey from a Kentucky farm boy to Nobel laureate embodies the American Dream and the triumph of entrepreneurial spirit. 

His groundbreaking 1977 discovery of RNA splicing rewrote the rules of molecular biology and ignited a lifesaving scientific revolution, laying the foundation for an industry that has become a cornerstone of global innovation and economic growth — and transformed the health of billions of patients worldwide.
