Failure Is an Option, Speaker Says at Faculty Convocation

    October 22, 2024

Professor Kimberly Lumpkins of the School of Medicine delivers her speech, “The Will to Fail,” at the Faculty Convocation on Sept. 12.

At the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) 2024 Faculty Convocation in September, speaker Kimberly Lumpkins, MD, MBA, of the School of Medicine encouraged UMB faculty to embrace failure as a path to growth, rejecting the pursuit of perfectionism. She shared personal stories of taking risks and learning from failure.

The second speaker, Sydnee Chavis, DMD, MS, of the School of Dentistry, discussed her sister’s disability, emphasizing the importance of seeing people’s abilities beyond their limitations. The School of Pharmacy’s Andrew Coop, PhD, MA, addressed the issue of declining public trust in experts, urging faculty members to combine knowledge with integrity and empathy. UMB leadership also celebrated the latest cohort of Distinguished University Professors during the event.
