General

The AF-GWT was created to assist departments in Administration and Finance with the creation and submission of grant proposals.

A member of the AF-GWT will partner with the principal investigator (PI) to work through the submittal process.

Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA) - Throughout the life of your proposal and award, SPA provides oversight and administrative support to investigators and departmental administrators.

Sponsored Projects Accounting and Compliance (SPAC) - Serves as a resource and partner to departmental administrators and researchers in all aspects of post-award financial administration. They provide accounting and compliance support to the departments that are responsible for sponsored project execution and the day-to-day financial administration of the award.

Any employee within Administration and Finance can use the AF-GWT services.

No, the group is available to answer questions and help if requested. Other resources for submission assistance include the Office of Research and Development (Janet Simons).

No, however we recommend you receive the approval of your supervisor and unit head. You can also reach out to the AF-GWT at AF-Grant@umaryland.edu if you would like our assistance submitting to Kuali Research.

If you wish to submit the grant application on your own in Kuali Research, you will need to be given security access, and Kuali Research training is strongly recommended prior to use.

No, there is no cost to you or your department for these services.

Please email our team at AF-Grants@umaryland.edu.

A comprehensive list of UMB-awarded grants is not publicly available. A request of grants awarded to A&F can be submitted to AF-Grants@umaryland.edu. For users with access, Kuali Research can provide a history list of the grants the user has submitted, whether awarded or not.

Pre-Award

Funding comes primarily from THREE sources: the government, private business or corporations, and foundations. Anyone can sign-up for list-serve notifications (those with * require a subscription).

We recommend talking to your supervisor so they can help determine if the grant aligns with your unit and A&F’s mission. If your supervisors agree it is an opportunity to pursue, reach out to the AF-GWT at AF-Grant@umaryland.edu if you would like assistance to submit a proposal for sponsor consideration.

Kuali Research is UMB's enterprise system for electronic research administration. All grants must be submitted through this platform for approval.

  • Kuali Research can be accessed in two ways:
    • myUMB portal under “Administrative Systems”
    • Through the ORD website

No, you must be granted access to use the platform. Training is also required prior to access being granted.

This will depend upon your grant requirements, but the minimum to write, edit and have the grant approved can be as little as a few days to several months.

Any submission or funding notice that requires matching funds from UMB for submission will require permission from A&F’s SVP before the application can be submitted in Kuali Research.

UMB’s institutional information is available online.

Many granting agencies include a template for the necessary items to be submitted. However, if a template is not provided, your department will need to create a budget showing the expense for your project for the period of funding requested. The AF-GWT can also assist with creating a project budget.

Post-Award

Your grant will be submitted through Kuali Research and routed to the necessary administrator for approval.
