Statement from Chancellor Caret: Supporting Hurricane Harvey Victims

September 01, 2017

Over the past week, we all have watched in horror as Hurricane Harvey devastated a huge swath of South Texas.

After 50 inches of rain, unprecedented floods, at least 39 deaths, and an immeasurable toll on survivors throughout the region, millions of affected families and people will struggle for months and years to rebuild and restore what was lost. As overwhelming as they are, these statistics pale in comparison to the thousands of individual stories we have encountered from women, men and children whose lives have been tragically upended.

I hope students, faculty, and staff across the University System of Maryland will consider contributing to ongoing relief efforts as and if they are able. There are a host of worthy nonprofit charities undertaking critical work in the region. Those looking for guidance on where to donate can find lists of reputable organizations in the New York Times, NPR and Fortune.

Generosity and compassion have long been hallmarks both of our state and our community of educators, learners and scholars. I'm confident we will demonstrate those traits again as we come to the aid of our friends and fellow citizens throughout the affected region.
