The Center for Information Technology Services (CITS) has installed SunGard HE’s Banner system to meet the needs of students, faculty, schools, and programs at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB).
This Student Information Management System (SIMS) also addresses the needs of admissions, registration, financial aid, student accounts, academic history, graduation, student housing, and student immunizations. These elements represent the critical core functions of a student information management system. SIMS is providing schools with the ability to control their own student data. Direct access to information supports improved decision-making in areas such as admissions, enrollment management, and student support.
Students benefit from the virtual one-stop shopping the system supports. They no longer have to trudge between student accounting, the registrar's office, and their school to find out, for example, why their registration has been blocked. Staff in each school are now able to access all of the academic and administrative records for their own students. The Student User Friendly System (SURFS) is now available as a web interface for students. Would-be graduate school, nursing, social work, and physical therapy students all use this interface to apply for admission and track its progress. Currently enrolled students use SURFS to:
Register for classes
Apply for financial aid
Track financial aid application progress
Accept/reject financial aid awards
View grades and transcript
Request official transcripts
Add/change personal email addresses
Change emergency contact information
Change marital status
If you have attended one of the formal training sessions and have been certified to access the production SIMS, you still need to submit a completed and authorized certificate to the Center for Information Technology Services (CITS) before you will be issued a User ID and password.
If you are a certified SIMS user, you are required to change your initial system password, the first time you log on. Your SIMS password should be secure and only known to you. Passwords must be a minimum of eight (8) characters in length and contain at least one (1) number. See the SIMS Password Guidelines for more information.
