The Southern Management Companies (SMC) Campus Center, nestled between the Health Sciences and Human Services Library and the School of Nursing, serves as a primary gathering spot for students and offers dining options, event spaces, and a full-service recreation and fitness complex on the upper floors, including an indoor pool.
The Campus Center also is home to the Fireplace Lounge on the first floor, a cozy area frequently used by students for small-group meetings, relaxation, and informal gatherings. Occasionally, the fireplace is lit during colder weather, enhancing the inviting atmosphere. Notably, this lounge occasionally serves as a gallery space for art exhibitions such as those organized for UMB’s 1807: An Art & Literary Journal and includes Amazon pickup lockers.
On the second floor, outside of the Elm Ballrooms, is a relatively new art collection called Presidents Hall that celebrates the institution’s leadership history and includes a portrait of Jay A. Perman, MD — who was UMB’s president from 2010 to 2020 — that was unveiled in 2023. The space also features a portrait of past UMB president David J. Ramsay, DM, DPhil, who led the University from 1994 to 2010.
At the south end of Presidents Hall is a piece of beautiful, detailed, metal window artwork that was fashioned by UMB President Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS, who is a an accomplished blacksmith, and Ukrainian blacksmith Anatoliy Rudik in 2012.
