Health Sciences Research Facility III (HSRF III) is a state-of-the-art biomedical research building at UMB. It supports cutting-edge research in areas such as cancer, neuroscience, and infectious diseases. It is one of the most advanced research facilities on campus, designed to foster collaboration among scientists and clinicians. Completed in 2018, HSRF III features a cantilever design to create additional streetscape space.
It also includes a continuous Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant ramp for accessibility and a light-filled atrium that maintains campus design continuity, as well as green roofs, a weather station, and bee hives. There are state-of-the-art research labs, and, notably, each ultra-low-temperature, negative-80-degree freezer used in the labs consumes the same amount of energy as a single-family home. (Interestingly, the interior atrium is so large and tall that it was used to record, with a drone, a trio of musicians playing music for graduation on one of the suspended walkways during the COVID-19 pandemic.)
