Stop 13
In the School of Nursing’s cherry tree-lined courtyard, toward the right, you can see a building addition that was completed in 2022. The addition expanded the original 1970s building footprint farther north toward Lombard Street. The design complements the surrounding campus architecture and features the engraved names of two Black alumnae, Esther McCready and Shirley Nathan-Pulliam, both of whom contributed significantly to the history of the school and the nursing workforce.
Inside, the addition features the second campus living green wall, accented by metalwork made by UMB President Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS. A live-edge counter and cabinet, crafted from a maple tree that once stood in the courtyard, adds a sustainable touch to the space. The green wall reaches up to the second floor of the addition, where a light-filled board room is home to an 1807 gallery focused on the School of Nursing’s contributions to UMB’s 1807: An Art & Literary Journal. From here, you can see the top of the green wall, which features a copper ribbon that President Jarrell created to be reminiscent of the Flossie, UMSON’s traditional nursing cap made of fluted lace. In the boardroom, a display showcases a historic Flossie and provides more information about its history.
Across the second-floor bridge from the boardroom, you’ll find the Living History Museum, which showcases the evolution of nursing through interactive exhibits and historical artifacts. This museum highlights the art and science of nursing, reflecting on its past, present, and future.
University of Maryland School of Nursing Courtyard
The University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) Courtyard was officially dedicated in 2018. It was created as a green space where UMB students, faculty, and staff could relax, study, and hold events. The lawn is part of UMB’s ongoing efforts to enhance campus aesthetics and provide outdoor gathering areas. If you visit in the spring, you likely will catch a glimpse of the many beautiful cherry trees bursting with soft pink blooms. The courtyard also includes Parsons Hall Garden, which honors the memory of UMSON’s historic student residence and the many nursing students and faculty who occupied it. It serves as a reflective space.
