The Dr. Samuel D. Harris National Museum of Dentistry (completed in 1904) is a Smithsonian Affiliate and congressionally designated museum of the dental profession. The museum’s mission is to inspire the future of oral health through celebrating the heritage of the dental profession. Showcasing interactive exhibits about the history of the dental profession and dental education, which was officially established in Baltimore in 1840, the museum preserves over 50,000 objects related to dental history. Visitors are usually interested to see items such as George Washington’s dentures and Queen Victoria’s dental instruments, as well as many other interesting objects.
Through its educational programming and partnerships with other UMB programs and local, state, and national organizations, the museum teaches learners of all ages about the importance of oral health to a healthy life and pathways to joining the dental and other health care professions.
The museum is open to the public Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is free to the UMB community, and has event spaces available upon request.
