RCR Training

Information related to RCR requirements:

Faculty and Staff: If you have NIH or NSF funding, your trainee(s) must complete the RCR training.

Graduate Students and Post-Doctoral: If you are funded by the NIH or NSF, you must complete the RCR training.

The NIH and NSF have RCR training requirements for trainees:

Each school is responsible for training its graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and trainees in the Responsible Conduct of Research.

The School of Medicine offers CIPP 907-Responsible Conduct of Research.
The School of Pharmacy offers PHARM 615-Ethics and Biostatistics.
The School of Social Work offers individual RCR training for NIH/NSF trainees. Please contact the associate dean for research at the School of Social Work for information.
The School of Dentistry offers CIPP 907-Responsible Conduct of Research for students of the GPILS PhD program. The School of Dentistry offers DBMS 605-Scientific Method, Writing and Ethics for graduate students in the BMS-MS, BMS-PhD, and DDS-PhD, Oral Pathology-PhD programs.
The School of Nursing offers CIPP 909-Responsible Conduct of Research course through the School of Medicine. Ongoing RCR training also occurs through face-to-face meetings with their mentor. In addition, each trainee participates in individually tailored training and courses as outlined in each grant submission. CITI RCR training also is encouraged.

Responsible Conduct of Research Training must cover the following areas:

Conflict of interest — personal, professional, and financial.
Policies regarding human subjects, live vertebrate animal subjects in research, and safe laboratory practices.
Mentor/mentee responsibilities and relationships.
Collaborative research including collaborations with industry.
Peer review.
Data acquisition and laboratory tools; management, sharing, and ownership.
Research misconduct and policies for handling misconduct.
Responsible authorship and publication.
The scientist as a responsible member of society, contemporary ethical issues in biomedical research, and the environmental and societal impacts of scientific research
