Your Rights as a Research Participant

As a participant in a research study at the University of Maryland, you have specific rights. These rights are in place to protect your safety, dignity, and well-being. Please review the information below carefully.

Access to Care

You have the right to receive medical care and treatment without discrimination based on race, creed, gender, disability, national origin, or ability to pay. Your care may include pain management, as well as attention to psychosocial and spiritual needs, when appropriate.

Responsiveness

You may expect a reasonable and timely response to requests for care or services, consistent with the medical center’s capabilities, its stated mission, and applicable laws and regulations.

Respect and Dignity

You have the right to be treated with consideration and respect at all times and under all circumstances. Your personal dignity will be recognized throughout your participation in the research study.

Personal Safety

You have the right to reasonable protection and safety, consistent with the medical center’s practices and the research environment.

Communication

You have the right to communicate with individuals outside the medical center, as appropriate to your level of care and in accordance with the requirements of the research protocol.

Advance Directives

You have the right to make decisions about your future health care, including appointing an individual to make health care decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so.

Informed Consent

You have the right to receive clear information about the research study to help you make an informed decision about participation. This includes:

  • The purpose of the study
  • The procedures and/or treatments involved
  • Possible risks and consequences
  • The names and roles of research staff

You may refuse to participate or withdraw from the study at any time. Choosing not to participate or withdrawing will not affect your current or future medical care.

Continuity of Care

You may expect reasonable continuity of care. You will be informed in advance of:

  • Your appointment schedule
  • When physicians or investigators will be available
  • Any health care requirements following discharge from the study

Privacy and Confidentiality

You have the right to privacy and confidentiality regarding your health information. Your information will be protected in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
