All sponsored awards must be formally closed, whether they end as planned or are terminated early. Close-out and termination involve specific financial, technical, and compliance requirements that must be completed within sponsor-defined deadlines.

Awards may:

  • Expire as scheduled, after project activities and deliverables are complete, or
  • Be terminated early, in whole or in part, by the sponsor or by UMB.

The actions required depend on how and when the award ends.

Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA) and Sponsored Projects Accounting and Compliance (SPAC) work closely with departments and investigators to ensure all sponsor, financial, and compliance obligations are met.

Award Close-out applies when an award has reached its planned end date or when project work has concluded and focuses on final reports, financial reconciliation, and completion of sponsor requirements.

Award Close-Outs

Termination of Award applies when an award or subaward ends before the planned period of performance and addresses immediate actions, cost considerations, compliance notifications, and sponsor communications.
