Letter from President Perman

Dear Colleagues:

When the Maryland General Assembly adjourned at midnight on April 11, 2011, they had debated and acted upon hundreds of issues and allocated billions of dollars.

We are particularly excited about one funding decision that has a very positive impact on this University.

The legislature advanced the approval for planning the construction of our long awaited Health Sciences Facility III (HSFIII). This research facility is essential to the continued growth of our extraordinary research portfolio. While the School of Medicine will provide significant funding and will be the main beneficiary of this research facility, the other UMB schools will also have opportunities for team-based research.

HSFIII will enhance our ability to retain as well as attract top notch research faculty. This very positive decision by the legislature allows the University to begin the important planning phase of this project, which will significantly expand our physical plant and research capacity in the years ahead.

We want to thank all of you who worked so long and hard to make this facility a reality.

Sincerely yours,

Jay A. Perman, MD
